How to Make Homemade Shelf Stable Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats - Free Recipe!

With homemade dog food becoming so wildly popular these days, I thought it would be nice to share our recipes for shelf-stable homemade dog treats.

One of the best things about our recipes is that, by following the directions below, they will have a much longer shelf life than most homemade dog treats. They will easily last for a month, or more, if you follow the easy directions below.

The recipe below is one of many that we will be posting in the future. All of them share 3 key instructions that must be followed for these recipes to be successful, 1. Oat flour. No other flour will work. 2. Drying. The cookies must be left in the warm oven overnight at the very least to thoroughly dry. 3. Size consistency. Be sure to roll your dough to 1/4" thickness because if they are too thick, they may not dry all the way through.

Oat flour is not always easy to find; however, I just found Bob's Red Mill brand available on Walmart. We purchase Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats on Amazon and then grind them with our flour mill. Either way will work just fine.

Peanut Butter & Banana Dog Treats

2 ½ cups oat flour
½ cup warm water
2 eggs
3 Tbs. smooth peanut butter (be sure it is made without xylitol, we use Smucker's Organic)
1 small ripe banana, smashed up with a fork
Optional Topping: ¾ cup rolled oats
 1 large egg, beaten

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

1. In mixing bowl, add water and egg, beat vigorously with a whisk until frothy. Add peanut butter and banana, stir until smooth. Add flour and stir until well blended. Rest dough in refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

2. Remove dough from fridge and add 3 quick shots of hot water from faucet to help warm the dough. Stir (you may need to use your hands because the dough will be very stiff.) Add a little more flour if too soupy.

3. Turn out on floured surface and knead dough until it becomes a well formed, non-sticky ball; add more flour as needed.

4. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes with a cookie cutter.

5. Arrange onto cookie sheet without edges touching or overlapping. Brush cookies with egg wash then sprinkle with rolled oats, evenly.

6. Bake for 25 minutes; then shut off the oven. Leave treats in the warm oven, with the light on overnight (at least 8 hours).

Store treats in an air-tight container in a cool, dry place. We hope your dogs enjoy these as much as our dogs do! It gives me great peace of mind making our dogs these cookies knowing exactly what goes into them for their health and wellbeing.
